Content:
Moving is one of the most direct ways we experience ourselves and the world. And yet, moving freely and skillfully is becoming more and more distant from the way many of us live.
Many people train strength, flexibility, dance, acrobatics, martial arts, yoga, or other physical disciplines, but still don’t feel fully available in their bodies. They may be strong but not fluid. Flexible but not coordinated. Technical but not free. Expressive but not grounded.
The Quality of Moving is a workshop about bridging these gaps through movement practice.
In this workshop, quality is not about showing off. It is not about copying an impressive body or reaching a perfect form. Quality is the attention within the action. The timing of a fall. The way we receive the floor. The way we use strength without becoming rigid. The way we stay available when situations change.
We will work between discipline and art, between the technical and the natural, between training and play. The aim is not to collect more movements, but to become more connected inside the movements we already have, and more prepared for the ones we have not yet met.
We don’t mix disciplines for variety. We use them to study relationship, adaptability, and quality. To find universal principles of movement. The body already carries a history: previous training, habits, instincts, injuries, fears, imagination. The practice is not to erase this history, but to bring it into the work and let it become useful.
Our method of quality is divided into five relationships, which we will share and explore throughout the workshop:
1) The relationship with the self
Movement meditation, breathwork, attention, and improvisation. A way to listen before moving, and to move without disconnecting from ourselves.
2) The relationship with gravity
Lower-body mobility and strength, momentum, falling, soft acrobatics, and the use of weight. A way to stop fighting gravity and start learning from it.
3) The relationship with the ground
Floorwork, locomotion, footwork, inversions, rolling, pushing, and rising. A way to understand the floor not as an obstacle, but as support.
4) The relationship with space
Dance, gait, rhythm, jumping, direction, and orientation. A way to move with clarity inside changing environments.
5) The relationship with the other
Partnering, physical communication, listening, resistance, collaboration, and healthy competition. A way to stay responsive when movement is no longer only ours.
The workshop moves between guided explorations, technical material, physical tasks, improvisation, and partner work. It can be demanding, but the demand is not to perform. The demand is to pay attention, to adapt, to try again, and to stay present inside the process.
The work can be adapted to different bodies and backgrounds, but it asks for real engagement.Through these five relationships, we will explore movement not only as a result, but as an experience. To be fully immersed and engaged with movement - that itself is the goal of this practice. No specific background is required.
The workshop is recommended for people who are already curious about movement and have some kind of physical practice or experience. It is for dancers, martial artists, acrobats, movers, athletes, teachers, and anyone who wants to ask deeper questions through the body, not only through the mind.
“Quality is the continuing stimulus which causes us to create the world in which we live. All of it. Every last bit of it.” - Robert M. Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
