What is “advanced” in acrobatics and dance?
Nowadays you can see online little kids in distant countries doing crazy feats of skill and coordination. Tricks, in that sense, are a demonstration of control, but does it mean more knowledge? In my practice, soft acrobatics and floorwork are pathways for self-expression and self-learning. In that sense, advancing means understanding better and better their possibilities and how to use them in spontaneous moments. This way of thinking and practicing leads to a practice that deals more with movement qualities and principles rather than tricks. Ebb and flow, expansion and contraction, straight and curved. Moving within these types of tensions leads to a much more wholesome experience than chasing only complexity and challenge. And when complexity and challenge emerge within them, the mind remains calm and is free to express, and not think only mechanically.
Another important aspect of advanced soft acrobatics and floorwork is erasing the line between take-off, climax, and landing. My system looks for simple actions that transform these three stages of classical acrobatics into a fluent motion, with more skeletal ease, muscular tensegrity, and clarity of intention. All in all, my proposal for this advanced workshop can be seen as knowledge for advanced practice. And despite using dance and acrobatics as its physical tools, this way of thinking can resonate with any movement practitioner of any discipline.
Lastly, my work as an artist is present in the background, and I bring the same rigor and passion into the syllabus. We might find ourselves dancing without the direct intention to do so…
