“The right art is purposeless, aimless. The more obstinately you try to learn how to shoot the arrow for the sake of hitting the goal, the less you will succeed in the one and the further the other will recede. What stands in your way is that you have a much too willful will. You think that what you do not do yourself does not happen.” - Eugen Herrigel
The foundation and concept of this workshop are divided into four main parts, which aim to provide a wide base of action for movement practitioners of any background and age:
PART 1 - WARM-UP
Our concept of warm-up is based on the mover’s need to tune into a clear and subtle quality before their practice and execution. The warm-up starts from meditation and is focused on grounding, posture, and breath. The routine we teach is inspired by concepts of Chi Kung, Tai Chi Chuan, and Chaya (Shadow) Yoga, and particularly the “Balakarma” series (stepping into strength). All of these bodies of work have been integrated and interpreted into a “moving meditation” routine. This routine emphasizes the opening of the darkest parts of our bodies - our legs, which are also the most distant from our eyes. Demanding postures, alongside gentle flow with circular motions and spirals, are introduced to provide better awareness of the lower parts. Additionally, the routine moves into what we call preparations for low movement. These are different techniques for moving close to the ground while maintaining the gentle functions and softness of the wrists and neck. Going through the warm-up, the mover organically opens their perception and spatial awareness and creates a ritual that optimizes their sensitivity, intuition, and desire to move.
PART 2 - CREATIVITY AND IMPROVISATION
Our improvisation practice begins with a creative research framework that we call “Clean Paper.” This is an approach to defining the personal motives and inspiration for movement, deconstructing what “moves” each person, and only then moving on to which movement they choose to develop, train, and express.Clean Paper uncovers each participant’s authentic movement language. It emphasizes approach over outcome and allows participants to embrace limitations and enjoy challenges without pressure for specific results. Clean Paper supports artistic growth, making it accessible regardless of age or experience. The benefits of this practice may seem “only” creative, but it also has a direct connection to adaptability and efficiency in athletic and goal-oriented practices. It is our proposition for a long-term, personal, challenging, and rewarding creative practice that can adapt to the constant changes in one’s life.
PART 3 - PARTNERING
If dancing alone is a relationship with imagination, dancing with a partner is a relationship with reality. We believe that these two skills are fundamental and relevant to each other, but if we practice one without consciously looking for the creative connections with the other, it is hard to sense and experience the actual benefit. In that sense, virtuosity and skill will appear when the line between imagination and reality slightly fades away. Then, solo dance and partner dance become inseparable. This inseparability leads to questioning communication and dialogue, opening a field with endless developments and wide potential.Within this practice, we explore how we read space, the other body, and the space of the other body. This does not necessarily require changing the shapes or forms created by one’s own body, but rather refining perception and response.Dancing with another person is a constant acknowledgment of the unknown. This is not an abstract or spiritual idea, but a technical and concrete understanding of partnering and collaboration through movement. No matter how developed one’s technique is, space must always be left to re-evaluate the situation and listen to the needs and intentions of the other moving body.We believe that practicing this approach creates the conditions to apply technique appropriately and, at times, to propose new ideas that have not yet been explored.
PART 4 - TECHNIQUE
Our technique serves as a “risk management” mechanism that ultimately leads to freedom on a much larger scale than is usually experienced by performers of a single discipline. We introduce dynamics of falling, rolling, collapsing, flipping, and melting down in order to reduce and eventually eliminate the types of actions we usually refer to as “failure” in dance, athletics, and martial arts. The practice is composed of both simple, almost “daily” actions alongside “complicated” acrobatic risks, without distinguishing between them or judging what is important or unimportant. This approach allows a blend of influences from the animal kingdom, Capoeira, Gymnastics, Contact Improvisation, Tae Kwon Do, Parkour, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Tango, B-boying, House Dance, and more to become possible expressions. Our idea of technique is to provide the most essential and accessible tools for people to achieve their movement objectives. Part of this toolbox is the sensitivity and assessment of the physical capacities and limitations of each practitioner, without judgment. This fosters a state of readiness, empowering practitioners to engage movement with a childlike curiosity. Whether in simple actions or acrobatic feats, the pursuit is a calm and clear purpose. Technique becomes the eye of the storm, both in movement situations and in daily life.
