Content
At the center of the intensive is a simple question: How can we move more freely under pressure?
Pressure in recent years is coming at us from all directions. Politically, socially, economically and even from our environment. How can we navigate all of these through our movement practice? We believe that practice can be a reality changer, a personal invented space that can transform the way we relate to the world and consequentially, to the troubles of our time.
Through the meeting point between dance, martial arts, soft acrobatics, partnering and skill acquisition we will go on a technical, playful and creative journey of finding the underlying connections between different movement disciplines. We will distill principles and create spaces where we can experiment and integrate them into our bodies. We will search for the synthesis between creativity and technique. Each new technique can be a new way of understanding the world and solving problems.
The event will include 6 days of classes divided by 3 teachers. Each day will begin at 10 and end at 18 and will take place at Movement Archery’s studio in the Forest of La Floresta in Barcelona. Additionally there will be 2 evening sessions dedicated to the mental side of movement.
We will cover:
Breath and Movement - The synchronization between breath and movement is the most potent principle available to the human animal. It improves mobility, increases awareness and soften impact on the ground and other bodies. We will explore how this idea can turn intense situations into moving meditations.
Groundwork - Learning to move low is learning to move. The universal principles that tie together grappling, acrobatics and dance. It also brings together the learning process of babies and animals.A practice that draws the line from the primal to the acrobatic and complex.
Improvisation - The art of playing with the unexpected. Bringing together the internal world with the external impulses and surprises.
Partnering - Developing capacity and sensitivity to the difference between competition and collaboration. Understanding that both can contain resistance, structure and learning how to move in a fluid manner between all of them.
Creativity - What can be invented in moments of tension and distress?
Can we rely on fundamental human movement principles to recreate in the moment of action?
How does each body and presonality find their own creative methods?
The Inner Game - We will enter the mental side of practice through ‘the inner game of movement’ evening sessions. These will cover: presence, fear, dominance, space, internal dialogue, performance and the stories we carry while moving. The inner game sessions will happen in the evening and will be constructed through lectures and group discussions and activities.
Teachers
Tom Weksler
Tom Weksler is a choreographer, performer and movement teacher, and the founder of Movement Archery. His work brings together dance, martial arts, acrobatics, floorwork and improvisation into a practice of physical clarity, creativity and adaptability. Through his teaching, Tom invites students to study movement as a way to understand the body, sharpen perception and meet complexity with more freedom.
Roser Tutusaus
Roser Tutusaus is a performer, choreographer and movement teacher, and co-director of Wonderground together with Tom Weksler. Her practice moves between contemporary dance, floorwork, partnering, scenography and the poetic relationship between body, space and material. In her teaching, Roser brings sensitivity, precision and imagination to the study of movement, with a deep attention to texture, rhythm and presence.
Margot Ciccarelli
Margot Ciccarelli is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, competitor, coach and movement researcher.
